Chicago!
Phew! After a whirl-wind last few days I am finally safe and sound in Chicago. Here’s a brief journal:
Tuesday: Finished packing, etc. with some help from Amy, Heidi, and Dave. Developed a bizarre case of hives at about 10:30pm. Talked to Emily and Amy about it, took lots of Benadryl, and lay tossing and turning in my bed, miserable and itchy. Finally dropped off to sleep at about 3am.
Wednesday: My sisters, Merry and Jackie, came to help me load up my parents’ car at about 10:30am. My Dad came down at around 1pm with the truck for my furniture. We moved everything to my parents’ house. Around 6pm my rash came back, worse than ever! This thing is so creepy. I showed it to my mother, who freaked out. By bedtime, the hives covered about a fourth of my body, but thankfully they weren’t on my neck/face very badly, so my breathing was all fine. Took lots of benadryl and finally fell asleep at about midnight.
Thursday: My mother decided I shouldn’t leave for Illinois yet. I stubbornly refused to stay in Cincinnati, so we compromised on a trip to the docotr’s to see what he had to say. My docotor said the rash could be caused by any of about a million things; the most likely being a bacterial or viral infection, or stress. They did a throat culture to rule out strep, and basically said to keep taking benadryl. Great. I have an infectious skin disease. Well, every church needs their resident leper, right? Maybe I can find nine others once I get to Naperville and we can go together to be healed. You know, honestly this shouldn’t be any big surprise to me; every mission trip I have ever gone on I have gotten sick right before-hand. This is probably just more of the same. You can be praying about this whole thing, if you are so inclined. Daddy and I finally got on the road around 11am.
Friday: Hung out with my Grandma, Aunt Sue, Aunt Kathy, Uncle Fred, cousin Kourtney, and various other assorted relatives in Rockford. Had Brats for lunch, then Polish food from a Polish Deli for dinner…I am s-o s-i-c-k of sausage! Never want to see another link again. I was never a fan to begin with. Saw a great musical called The Hot Mikado. Hysterical. Gilbert & Sullivan are some of my favorites; their sense of humor is so…well, British. Probably has something to do with the fact that they were British.
Saturday: Drove down to Naperville/Romeoville (I work in Naperville but live in Romeoville) and met up with Rachel, Alex, and Josh and Crystal (who were in for the week-end; yay!) for lunch. Then Dad left and the five of us went shopping in Naperville for a while. Yay, Payless Shoes! Watched Ocean’s 11 and went to bed.
Sunday: Went to church, came home, called Cincinnati and talked to Justin, Emily, and Steve (the gang was all at Chipotle). I miss everyone so much! *sniff sniff* The first three days of moving anywhere I am always emotional and miserable. I feel very displaced. After that I acclimate to my new surroundings and am fine. Ate lunch and finished unpacking.
All in all, I’ve had a very fast-paced week. Tomorrow is my first day at work. I’m a little nervous. Since I’m on a quarter school and some of the other interns are on semester schools, most of them have already been here for a couple of weeks. So they are all settled in and have made their friends, and I’m the newbie. :-\ We’ll have to see how it goes.
Much love!
