Day Two

Second day at work, and I’ve finally met some other interns! Yay! I am going to a small group tonight, too, held at my boss, Katie’s, home. SO I’ll meet people there too. Unfortunately– or fortunately– I’ve met about twenty other people too…and I can’t remember many names…so I only remember Tammy, who’s giving me a ride tonight, and Matt, who is from New York City and is rude if you don’t remember his name. Scary. The other interns call him Mr. Attitude. I am trying to remember my boss from the Student Activities Office at UC, Lucy’s, advice: “Never let anybody intimidate you.” Easier said than done. The other interns are all from tiny Christian colleges in the middle of corn fields. Hmm. Feeling a little out of place here. At least everyone except Matt seems nice, and I’m sure he warms up once you get to know him. He just is certain that he knows everything. And that he should be able to tell it to you. And that you should keep your mouth shut. A little like Brian Sowers, now that I think of it, and he is from Jersey…and he’s a nice guy underneath that jerk-y exterior.

It is so strange being thrown into a church, as it were, and given work to do right away, without knowing anybody really or having gotten to feel as though the church were your home. I have done lots of work for and at churches before, but I have always felt at home their first and known everybody. People still look at me as though I had no business to be in the office and give me the “Can-I-help-you-you-shouldn’t-be-back-here-but-I’m-too-polite-to-say-so” look, complete with quirked eyebrow and line-backer posture, to prevent me from getting any further. And then I have to explain that I’m the new intern, and I’m working for Katie.

Today I had lunch at Culvers, a Wisconsin chain of burger joints. I had their famous butterburger (no butter in it, from what I can tell!), their “famous” root beer, and cheese curds on the side! Now, I have heard of cheese curds before, from my friends Alicia and Dan. I have yet to figure out what, technically, they are. Alicia says they squeak when you eat them, and I presume that they are some part of the cheese. But further I dare not trow. I was not brave enough to try any of hers at bible study the night she brought them. But at any rate these, I think, were different than those. These were breaded and fried. The waitress recommended we eat them dipped in ranch dressing, so we did, and they were quite good! Yummy. Weird, but yummy.
