Randomness
Yesterday it was so humid out that it felt like 110 degees, when in actuality it was only 82. It rained over night though and now it is much cooler and less humid; it’s in the seventies and feels it.
So the other day I was talking to Melissa Miller, a new friend I have made who works at the community center where the south branch of our cafe is located. I asked her how she met her husband and she had the funniest story.
Apparently her step-mother met Matt first. They commuted in to the city to work on the same train every day, and (against usual public transportation etiquette) started talking one day. After that they talked every day and soon knew all about each other. So when Melissa broke up with her then-current boyfriend (he was very abusive and it wasn’t pretty) at the same time as Matt broke up with his then-current girlfriend (of six year, it also wasn’t pretty), Melissa’s step-mother decided that they should each have somebody to talk to about how lousy break-ups were and gave Melissa’s phone number to Matt. That was all it was supposed to be. But fate decided to throw them all for a loop. After talking on the phone every day for about three weeks, Matt said to Melissa, “What are you doing?” “Nothing.” “Well, why don’t you come down to see me?” Melissa was like, I don’t think so! I know you second hand through random conversations on a train. You could be a serial killer who eats his victims livers for breakfast, or something! So they talk back and forth about it for a while and finally Melissa says, and I quote, “Alright, I’ll come down to see you but I’m bringing my gun just in case!” (That just cracks me up so bad. And if you only knew her! She’s so sweet she could never use a gun on anything. Cracks me up.) So they met and they’ve pretty much been inseperable every since.
There are other interesting people at the community center too. There’re some really hot soccer players, for one thing. They are the reserve team for the Chicago Fire, Chicago’s pro soccer team, and they have great hair and a few of them have even great accents. There’s one really tall British guy who comes in every day to order a raspberry italian lemonade. At first he made fun of them on the menu because he couldn’t figure out from the name what the heck it was (lemonade, raspberry syrup and ice blended into a sort of slushie is probably the best description but you can’t put that on a menu). But then I talked him into trying one, because they really are very good, and he’s hooked; a total convert. So he doesn’t make fun of the name any more; now he comes and in and orders them and flirts with me every day and I don’t mind one bit, let me tell you.
Last night Tammy and Donnie and I went to the drive-in and saw Harry Potter 3 and Spiderman 2; first time I’d seen either of them. I loved them both but I won’t bug you with long descriptions of what you have likely already seen for yourself if you care to see it at all. There was a little cartoon that was clearly left over from the sixties during intermission between the two films with dancing hotdogs and popcorns and other snacks; so cute! Although I must say that after ten minutes it palls. Anyways, it was the best time I think I’ve had since I came here. It’s so funny; there’s this one area of town on Route 30 or something out near Aurora that must be retro corner; it’s really out-of-the-way and there are cornfields nearby, but there’s a drive-in theatre and a bowling alley and a roller skating rink all right next to each other. It would make for a madly fun birthday party! Anyways. I hope everybody at home is having as much fun as I am. ![]()
