What Goodbye Tastes Like.

Today was my last day of work. It was so nice! They gave me two cards and a dozen roses, and I brought in a giant cookie decorated like a cake that said “thank you highpoint” (the name of the community center where the cafe is), and tonight I am taking Alex and Rachel out to dinner and then the cafe employees are taking me out to Oberweiss for ice cream.

My friend Steph gave me a ride home, but we were neither of us really ready to go home, and we had been talking up a storm about Smallville, which we are all to some extent obssessed with, so instead we went to her house, which borders a farm, and explored the corn field. So totally fun! Felony Melanie strikes again. (That’s what they call me at the cafe, ever since the night Matt and Steph and I stole an orange construction cone.) But now my face and wrists and hands are starting to break out so I think there must have been major pesticides on the corn. Yeah, not so cool. I’m gonna go shower quickly.

Tomorrow afternoon I will be headed to my grandmother’s for a few days, and then my Dad will come up, and we will see Chicago for a day, and then we will move me back to Cincinnati. Most of my stuff is back in my suitcases already.

So, this is what goodbye tastes like, then. Tangy, like one last glass of Katie’s Famous Lemonade. Rich, like the giant chocolate chip cookie we all shared at work today. Intoxicating, like the Apple Martini I’ll undoubtedly have with Rachel and Alex tonight. Sweet, like the ice cream I’ll share with my buddies at Oberweiss. Salty, like a few teary farewell hugs. But overall, it tastes bittersweet. I’ll be sad to leave Naperville, but I can’t wait to get back to Cincy.
