A diamond is forever

Hello. Your friendly neighborhood consumer reporter here. Your coffee’s fair trade, your tea’s fair trade, your chocolate’s fair trade, but what about your engagement ring?

OK, ladies. A lot of girls I know are probably going to be getting engaged sometime in the next several years. You know who you are. And you’ll expect a diamond, of course. But what you may not know is that the condidtions for workers in diamond mines generally violate human rights acts, and have even come to the notice of the UN. Also, the profits from the diamond trade are used by the often corrupt governments of the poor African nations they come from to support totalitarian regimes and terrorist acts. Not so cool.

So, to make sure that your diamond doesn’t cost too much, make sure your boy knows to buy it from a place that says safe diamonds. Here is a link to one such company (Apparently there is a diamond mine in Northern Canada. Who knew!) You might have to take a little trip to Canada to buy one, but hey, you’ve always wanted to see Montreal anyways, right? Right. http://www.aurias.com/en/index.shtml
