The French Are Coming

OK so they aren’t really, I just wanted to say that because it sounds cool.

I have a thing for French music. I don’t know why. I am fairly uneducated about classical music, because it’s not like I ever played an instrument or took a music history class or anything. But I’ve noticed a trend: i really like pieces by French composers. There’s no rhyme or reason to the other pieces I like, but if it’s French, I like it. Debussy is my favorite composer (well…ok, he and Aaron Copeland are tied). Lakme is my favorite opera. I’m on a Ravel kick right now, because my friend Jessica (who is a French Horn performance major at CCM) lent me a CD of his “String Quartet in F major.”

French music– or at least the stuff I listen to– is very fluid and romantic, soft and delicate, and expressive; it is to the music world what impressionist/expressionist painting (think Monet, Renoir) is to the art world.

I love it. Speed metal enthusiasts can just go soak their heads.
