Faithful
Today my best friend from the 2nd grade got married. It is so cool to have friends for that long. She’s my oldest friend; summer before the second grade my family moved here from NY, and she is the first person I met, the first day of class, the first day at a new school in a new city in a new state. (A few years later was when my family began home schooling).
I love the fact that she remembers my old fads and obssessions, that we played with My Little Ponies and American Girl dolls together, sang songs from The Little Mermaid when it first came out, joined– and quit– the Girl Scouts together, read Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew, and scared ourselves silly with stories about a warlock in the woods behind the Christian grade school we went to. And I even more love tha fact that every time I see her, we can still pick right up where we left off, no matter how long it has been; and we can do grown-up stuff now too, like go out for coffee and go to the art museum and talk about nature and God and art and life (which, personally, I think are really all four part of the same whole, seen from different sides).
Lori and I have had our spells of time– mainly in high school– where we would go a year without hearing from each other. But we’ve still kept in contact. We’ve been to birthdays, graduations, etc. together. And now we’ve been to a wedding. (Hopefully not the last!) She’s found her soul mate. A wonderful Christian friend to work side by side with.
As I walked out of her beautiful-and-elegant-yet-normal-and-comfortable wedding (it’s a strange dichotomy, I know, but it was all of those things; just like her) I had a tune stuck in my head. It bothered me for a while, and then I remembered what it was: a hymn from my childhood. Great is Thy Faithfulness. And all I could think was, wow, God really is so faithful. He is taking care of us. He has plans for us, and eventually they’ll all fall into place. It’s amazing really. It makes me so thankful.
So, congratulations, Lori and Aaron. I love you guys a lot (even though I didn’t meet Aaron until today b/c he is from Cali) and can’t wait to see what the future has in store. Because just as God is faithful, we will always be faithful friends.
Pictures if/when I can get them figured out.
