Failed Love

“Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:8

For a friend.

Ashes
Ashes surround me
On the ground
I’ve found among them
A broken me
A shadow of me
I didn’t know existed
Paler and thinner
Than I remember
Thanks to you
who take revenge in lieu
of love.
My soul an icy blue
I’ve played the fool
Can’t you forgive
Let our love live
I haven’t killed it—
No.
That took you.
I merely hurt it for a while
Made you frown instead of smile
But you
you turned frustration into rage
Set the scene on life’s great stage
For our demise
I see the fey light in your eyes
Is your pride really such a prize
Your satisfaction
With such cold comfort
Mystifies
But there it is.
A tiny tongue of flame
Still flickered on the same
I tried to fan
But I only can
Do so much against your rain
The birth pains
Of a love reborn
Were in my heart
Couldn’t you
Feel them too?
A phoenix chick
But you were quick
To smother it.
So I’ll sweep up
The ashes.
After all, that’s what I do best
Face the beautiful mess.
