Glamour and Intrigue

I love world news on the BBC. This is straight out of a movie.

Fugitive’s girl weds cricket son
The daughter of an Indian man accused by the US of having links to al-Qaeda has married the son of one of Pakistan’s most famous cricketers.

Dawood Ibrahim was not present to see his daughter Mahrukh marry Junaid Miandad, son of cricketer Javed Miandad at a lavish ceremony in Dubai. Mr Ibrahim is wanted in India over a series of bombs in Mumbai (Bombay) that killed about 300 people in 1993. He was placed on a US Treasury watch list of wanted terrorists in 2003.

Security was high for the wedding, held at a five-star hotel in Dubai, in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates. Reports indicated that Indian and US intelligence services were monitoring guests arriving for the celebrations in case Mr Ibrahim or some of his closest associates attended. The celebrations attracted a crowd of onlookers, many from Dubai’s large South Asian immigrant communities, who were fascinated by the glitz and glamour of the occasion. Javed Miandad, a legendary Pakistani batsman and coach who scored 8,832 runs in 124 Test matches, arrived dressed in a white suit.

Announcing the engagement earlier this month, the cricketer said the wedding was a personal matter, and said the families had nothing to hide. The couple met in London, where Junaid Miandad is studying. There are plans for a second wedding reception in August in Karachi, where Indian security forces accuse Pakistan of sheltering Mr Ibrahim.

Mr Ibrahim has denied involvement in the Mumbai bombings, and Pakistan denies that he is living in the country.
