25 Rules for Life

Numbers 1-16 of this are lifted almost straight out of a fabulous light-summer-reading sort of book called “Olivia Joules and the Over-active Imagination.” The rest are two parts me, one part Coco Chanel, one part Garden State and one part Ralph Waldo Emerson.

1) Never panic. Stop, breathe, think.
2) No one is thinking about you. Theyre thinking about themselves, just like you.
3) Never change haircut or coulour before an important event.
4) Nothing is either as bad or as good as it seems.
5) Do as you would be done by.
6) It is better to buy one expensive thing that you really like than several cheap ones that you only kind of like.
7) Hardly anything matters; if you get upset, ask yourself, “Does it really matter?” 8) The key to success lies in how you pick yourself up from failure.
9) Be honest and kind.
10) Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance.
11) Trust your instincts, not your overactive imagination.
12) When overwhelmed by disater, check if its really a disaster by doing the following: a) Think “Oh, screw it,” b) look on the bright side, and if there isn’t one, look on the funny side. Important note: There is always a funny side.
13) Don’t expect the world to be safe or life to be fair.
14) Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.
15) Don’t regret anything. The only thing you can change is the present, so learn from the past.
16) If you start regretting and thinking, “I should have done…,” always add, “…but that would have changed the whole course of the future for the whole world, and then I might have been run over by a truck or blown up by a torpedo.”
17) Never take yourself too seriously. Take others seriously, and take your work seriously, but not yourself. If you can’t laugh at yourself, life is going to seem much longer than you want it to.
18) Never tell any one particular person everything. For one thing, you’ll bore them eventually; and for another, you might come to depend on them too much.
19) Remember that people will let you down; therefore, self-reliance is paramount. Any time you want to do something that could jeopardize your independence, ask yourself: is it worth it? Often the answer is yes, but stop and check first.
20) The only thing worse than a favor is a favor involving money.
21) When in doubt, wear black.
22) When doing clothes and make-up, always remember that less is more. You can never be over-elegant, but you can certainly be over-dressed; so keep the concept simple, the lines clean, and the colors limited to no more than three, and preferably two.
23) Life hurts sometimes. That’s ok. Experience it, and realize that this is life. It is beautiful, it is crazy-cool, and most importantly it is all we’ve got.
24) Every once in a while you have to put away the camera and be in the moment.
25) Expect life to be messy. It’s not plain and simple and straightforward in real life, the way it is in books. Not all the little tails get wrapped up, and sometimes there’s no real plot. And sometimes there is no happy ending. But the sequal? Man, it’s a best-seller. ;-)

So, “the rest”, consisting of 8 questions, is divided into 5 spheres of influence? I’m confused.

I think you should add a 6th sphere of influence, John Mayer “3×5″ for the one about putting away the camera. ;)

There’s never enough John Mayer! Speaking of, I have a friend who looks exactly like John Mayer. Random, I know, but hey it’s my blog.

    1. Was just quoting “The Family Guy.” I don’t really have anything against him, but I enjoy making fun of him (John Mayer that is.)

    2. Random Rules!!!
