Calvin and Hobbes

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

In the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin asked the same impossible-to-answer scientific questions I did at age six…only his dad’s answers were much more interesting than my dad’s were; mostly because Calvin’s dad lied to him.
I was reminded of this fact by one of Eric’s ditzy co-workers lately. Here’s the comic strip it […]

Weather Report

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Here in Houston, we had a record high yesterday: with the heat index, it was 115 degrees.
At home in Cincinnati, where I am returning today, the high for the day will be 65 degrees.
I can’t dress for this plane trip!

Hmmm…

Last night Tom, amber, a friend of theirs and I played Apples to Apples. This game is usually more fun if you have a big group of people. It was more fun for us because we also each had a margarita at our elbows.
I think I’ve decided that I don’t like tequila. Mixked drinks with […]

A Song for Rita

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

I’ve been doing some soul-searching with this whole Hurricane Rita thing, you know?
I mean, why do I get so anxious and frightened about this kind of thing? I’m a Christian; I shouldn’t. I mean, God has promised that works all things to the good for those who serve him, and has demonstrated several times […]

Public Service Announcement:

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

Thank-you, City of Miami.
Do not barbecue inside your house during a hurricane! Apparently people die of carbon monoxide poisoning every year from trying this. Good times.

Hurricane Watch

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

And on the watch we are.
So, what do you do when waiting for all hell to break loose? Well first, you read all the bits in the Chronicles of Narnia where Aslan talks to Lucy, and try to make yourself realize, through the imagery, how trustworthy and loving God is, and the kind of courage […]

Trapped

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Ladies and Gentlemen, for the remainder of the show, the role of Screwed will be played by Melissa.
We cannot get out. We are stuck in Houston with a Category 5 hurricane headed towards us. Why? Well, there are 5 million people in the Houston Metropolitan area. Try evacuating even half that. It can’t be done. […]

Evacuation Plan

Objective: Get the hell out of dodge.
Destination: San Angelo Air Force Base.
Will update when accessible.

Things You Don’t Think About

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

The major hitch in the evacuation plans? Well, honestly, where can you go and take three large dogs with you?
I hadn’t really though much about it before, but here and now I make a vow (rhyming entirely unintentional): I will never own a pet which is too large to smuggle in somewhere in a handbag. […]
