Tiny Dancer
Over a year ago I wrote a post about the song Tiny Dancer, by Elton John. How it can be an almost religious experience to cruise down the back roads of the country with a friend on a summer night, surrounded by trees and cornfields, in a car with the skyroof open while singing along to Tiny Dancer on the radio at the top of your voice.
It’s time to post about it again. So here is my tribute. The song just reflects so much joie de vive. It celebrates life as we know it– and that life is a gift God has given us. Right?
OK, so maybe it’s just me. But it’s a fact that it feels pretty good to dance around the office to it all by yourself in the middle of Winter, too. Let’s just pause for a moment and appreciate the genius of a couple of men that produced the following song.
Tiny Dancer
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin, Music by Elton John
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

i love that song. it makes me think of a scene in almost famous where everyone is on a tour bus listening and singing along.
i catch a sense of the mystery of heaven in certain melodies and chord patterns and songs. i’m just wired that way. this is one of those songs for me. i couldn’t put a finger on it…

Yes! That’s it exactly. But I can’t explain it any more than you can.
At least I know I’m not crazy.

i so love that song… samuel played it on the piano and sang it for me on our first date, and while i loved it before that, i loved it even more afterwards.

The movie’s called The Second Chance and Michael W. Smith plays the pastor of big church who meets the pastor of a little inner city ministry. The plot seems to hinge on whether or not they can work together to save some little inner city church. I can’t remember if you wanted to be told this or not, so I’m taking no chances.
