The Fragrance of Life

Have you ever noticed how much smells affect your day? They make life so much richer. Here are a few of the smells I’ve experienced along the way this morning.

-My roommate’s shampoo. She uses something that smells lovely, whatever it is.

-Fresh ground coffee. At the fair trade coffee shop on the corner, as I wait for my morning cup.

-Sawdust and mustiness.  On the way to the bus stop there’s a shop they are renovating. when they are finished, a sweat-shop free clothing store will go in (hurray!). They’ve cut a big hole in the side of one wall where I suppose there will eventually be a receiving dock, and they’re excavating the basement right now. The gentle rain drifts in, and draws out all sort of lovely smells of basement and fresh sawdust, which waft out to the street as I walk past and make me think of my grandpa’s woodworking shop in his basement, where he used to make me toys like a doll’s cradle, a rocking horse, and a hardwood building-block set.

-Honeysuckle and lilacs blooming.

-An apple-scented candle I’m bruning near my desk.

-Floor cleaner as one of the half-way-house residents mops the hallway floor outside my office door.

Poll: what have you smelled today? Good smells only! Nasty ones don’t count.
