Live Football!

Hurrah! Finally able to watch it live. I’m home at my parents’ for the week-end (Happy Father’s Day, all!) and happily watching the World Cup (my parents are watching a Western starring Ronald Reagan in the other room– classic.)

Anyone see the Portugal-Iran match? What do people think about Czech Republic-Ghana? Of course, I’d like Czech Republic to win, for USA’s sake. Sadly I’ll have to tape Italy-USA because I’ve got a wedding to go to this afternoon. Boo! Who’d choose a wedding reception over soccer in a sports bar, with hard cider and die-hard fans? Even if I was the bride I’d probably prefer watching the game. Lol! But if you skip out on a wedding to watch sports on tv you’re considered a boor and a clod.

Well, there are people in from out-of-town for this wedding that I really want to see so it’s all ok. :-)

Holy freaking cow! Ghana! What a stunning upset! Amazing! What a fun match to watch!

You are an addict. I’m cracking up.

It’s half time in the USA vs. Italy match at the moment; that’s as crazy a match as we’ve had for several tournaments. That first red card offence was absolutley outrageous - I’ve seen fairer pub fights.

I find myself constantly impressed by the skills of Team USA, and then I have to go away and hide my embarassment before anyone finds out and beats me up.

It was truly a day for the underdogs! I didn’t get to tape the Italy-USA match. This just isn’t my world cup. Maybe four years from now I’ll have better luck. What is it they say, Phil? Damn and blast?

Well anyway, don’t feel too bad about liking the US soccer team. There are a few good things in the States. Like me, for instance. I’ll cheer for England if you’ll cheer for the States. But not, of course, if they play each other.

I find that reminding myself of some of the songs from the film, “Team America” helps me to cope better with being a closet supporter of the real Team America. Not such a good second half but they deserve snaps for holding on for a draw.

Damn and blast is good, I also like drat! double drat! horror! and WILL NO-ONE DELIVER US!

Hey Phil, if you thought the first red card was outrageous (and I thought it was at least questionalbe), then what about the second one?

Also, Mel, Ghana winning was the best thing that could happen to the US. Now, if the US wins Thursday and Italy beat the Czechs, then the US goes on to the second round to get killed by Brazil..

Oh, no no. It was the offence itself which I thought was outrageous. The red card was entirely justified. The second one? Not quite so bad; I wouldn’t have expected the card if it weren’t a chance to even things up. Great draw, though, gutsy stuff.

Secretly I have begun to hope for underperformance by England against Sweden. If we win we top the group and get an easier second round, and then promptly die to either Argentina or Brazil. Lose and, okay, we face Germany but then have easier pickings in the final stages.

Eric, Yes, got that figured out eventually. Make some allowances here for somebody who the only sport they ever played didn’t involve tournaments.
