Things I don’t like about this city.
Since I talk about the things I like so often I thought I’d throw out a few detractors, for balance.
1) The taxes.
2) Trash day in summer. The entire sidewalk smells.
3) Not enough grass and trees.
4) The sunrises and sunsets just aren’t as pretty here- but maybe that’s because of Cincinnati’s Seven Hills.
5) The woman on the Sorta who looks dead-on for Ashley Bartlett Bacon. (”Ashley.” “Scumbag. You’re engaged? Might I remind you that you proposed to me?” “You said no. We broke up.” “No, no, I was confused. We stepped back.” “You moved to Portugal.”)
6) Only three places in the entire city where I’ve been able to find cannoli– and one’s a chain so it doesn’t count.
7) No subway. Why? Why did we need Paul Brown Stadium? What was wrong with the light rail plan?
Lack of downtown shopping.

I feel your pain on the trash thing; the bits of Bristol where Charity works and which aren’t of the caucasian persuasion only get their rubbish collected on a fortnightly basis and the food waste is collected separatly. But not all folks understand the system, and it’s heatwave time at the moment so bins are getting full and collection day is a long way away. It smells, it’s icky and there are big maggots rolling around the streets.
And you can never have enough grass and trees. Ever.

Here in Over the Rhine we only get big rats. But thankfully it’s summer and the nights are short, so by the time I get off the bus it’s been light for hours and I don’t see them. In the winter it’s another matter; it’s only just beginning to get light out by the time I arrive and it seems several scamper off the trash cans and whisk away into the dim alleys each Thursday morning as I step off the bus.
